What is Shippo-yaki -七宝焼 (Cloisonné) ?

Shippo-yaki (Japanese cloisonné) is a handcrafted enamelware that uses an ancient enameling technique originating in the West during medieval times. Cloison, or segments, are closed within metal wires to contain fluid glass or enamel which create the design elements. The Shippo-yaki achieves its well-delineated colors and designs without wires, has an expanded ground usage that includes clay and glazed porcelain.

During the Meiji era, Japanese cloisonné enamel reached its renaissance, producing items more advanced than any that had existed before. Japanese enamels are highly regarded because of its new achievements in design and coloring, that incorporated new mediums and colors such as gold and silver speckles, foils, and pitch black.
