The bold contrast dye on the fabric is made possible by the technique of Shibori-zome. This bandana/scarf is made of cotton, but it's so smooth it feels like silk.
Product details
The Shirushi Zome dye technique dates back to the Muromachi period (AD1300). Since the beginning, its main purpose has been to make fabric stand out with vibrant colors and imagery. Flags, furoshiki, noren (the curtain dividers over the doorways of pubs, bathhouses, and the like) even athletic wear are dyed using this technique.
The Sugishita corporation from Kyoto has been honing their Shibori-zome skills over the years by making Festival jackets ("Happi") and Flags.
